It was developed from the F4U-4; the prototype was a converted F4U-4 (BuNo. 27296).
Numerous new technologies were integrated into the aircraft, and its first flight took place on December 21, 1945.
The F4U-5 had the longest nose of any Corsair. The extended nose housed the 2,300 hp R-2800-32W engine with an automatically regulated turbocharger.
The cockpit and canopy were redesigned. Production of the F4U-5 was limited to 233 aircraft by the end of the war.
The Corsair also saw service in the Korean War.
