- Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat (Early)
The Wildcat was the primary US carrier-based fighter upon entering World War II.
The F4F had a barrel-shaped design with angular wingtips and a rudder, and a narrow-track landing gear. It was well-armed and reliable, making it ideally suited for carrier operations, as landing on a carrier deck was likely easier than landing on land.
The F4F had no operational speed limit. In this configuration, the F4F-3 was accepted by the US Navy, and an order for 54 aircraft was placed in August 1939.
After the first two aircraft, the cowling machine guns were removed and four 12.7 mm cannons were installed in the wings. Production aircraft were powered by the R-1830-76 engine.
Most F4F-3s were unarmored and equipped with self-sealing fuel tanks.
