The An-2 prototype made its maiden flight on August 31, 1947. The aircraft continues to be produced, although the Antonov Design Bureau ceased manufacturing it in 1960. The An-2's designer, Oleg Antonov, had already worked as an aircraft designer during World War II. Originally developed for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the former Soviet Union, the An-2 Colt was soon adopted by the Soviet Air Force and built for other countries. It is ideally suited for developing nations due to its low maintenance requirements and ease of flight.
