In 1914, the Nieuport company intended to participate in the Gordon Bennett Trophy with a new racing aircraft, the Nieuport X.
However, the 1914 Trophy was cancelled due to the outbreak of the First World War, and the Nieuport X was instead produced in a slightly adapted version for the military.
The Nieuport Nie 10 was built as a single or two-seater and was used by the French Aviation Militaire, the British RNAS (which was the first to order the Nie 10) and also by the RFC.
Other major services using the Nieuports included the air forces of Belgium, Italy and Russia.
The Italians and Russians built their aircraft under licence.
The two-seat versions also differed in that the pilot sat either in the front cockpit (Nie 10AR) or in the rear cockpit (Nie 10AV) and was used as a reconnaissance and observer, while the single-seat aircraft were used as fighters.
Their armament varied greatly, as did the type of armament mounts.
With the advent of more advanced and specialised fighters and more capable two-seaters, the Nie 10s were relegated to training units.
