The A-10, a Cold War product of the US Air Force, was developed and deployed in the late 1970s to fight Warsaw Pact forces in Central Europe.
Instead, it was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991 as part of Operation Desert Storm.
It subsequently saw action again in Bosnia and later in Kosovo.
In all these combat missions, the A-10 vindicated its designers' objectives.
