The Piper L-4 "Grasshopper" was a modified variant of the Piper J-3 for the military. In total, around 5,800 L-4 machines were produced.
The L-4 was used in World War II as a courier, reconnaissance and observation aircraft, etc.
One of these aircrafts became famous thanks to the U.S. Army Major Charles Carpenter, who wanted to join in the fighting rather than just watch. He had the ground crew attach bazookas to the wing supports of his Piper and was able to have five German tanks and several other vehicles on his hit list by the end of the war. The plane was nicknamed "Rosie, the rocketeer".
