Northrop P-61 B Black Widow

After the air forces of various countries began to focus on night bombing, they became more effective than ever. To counter these night attacks, various night fighters were deployed. The United States began its night fighter program in 1940. The U.S. Army initially used the P-70 Havoc and the Beaufighter against the Japanese until the first 45 P-61 Black Widow entered active service in October 1943.
With the development of the more powerful SCR-720C onboard radar (a so-called airborne intercept radar), the conversion of the Army's P-61 aircraft began to integrate this modern system. The new variant of the Black Widow equipped with the SCR-720C was designated P-61B. On this Type B, the hull bow was lengthened, and later production series saw the reintroduction of the gun turret mounted on the back of the hull.
