The Douglas A-26 "Invader" (designated B-26 between 1948 and 1965) is a US-manufactured, twin-engine multi-role aircraft designed as a light bomber and ground-attack aircraft. It was developed in response to a specification issued by the Army Air Forces to the Douglas Aircraft Company. The type saw service in both World War II and the Cold War; some heavily modified aircraft (once again designated A-26) remained in service until 1969.
The combat-proven A-26 was characterized by high speed and the ability to carry double the originally specified payload. The installation of various weapon systems allowed it to be upgraded into a powerful ground-attack aircraft. The aircraft flew its first mission on November 19, 1944, with the Ninth Air Force in the European theater of operations. It saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters during the final months of World War II. After the war, the "Invader" was among the first aircraft deployed to support NATO in Europe. Six squadrons of this type participated in combat operations during the Korean War. Furthermore, the aircraft was used in the Pacific War, the First Indochina War, the Bay of Pigs invasion, and other conflicts.
Finally, the A-26 served with the Air National Guard; the aircraft was retired in 1972 and donated by the National Guard Bureau to the National Air and Space Museum.
