The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was designed as a new-generation torpedo bomber.
After the end of the war in 1945, plans were changed, and the Navy adopted the Skyraider as a new fighter due to its outstanding performance on strike missions.
The AD-4 is the largest production model in the Skyraider family.
A new 2,700 hp R-3350-26WA engine was installed, and the windshield was reinforced to protect the pilot from bullets.
A variety of new equipment was also installed, including two additional cannons, a P-1 autopilot, and a new arresting hook.
The AD-4 was redesignated A-1D in 1962 in accordance with the new US Navy nomenclature.
