
Poland was granted a license to build the aircraft in 1955, and over the next five years around 477 aircraft were built both for use by the Polish Air Force and for export sale.
The MiG-17s built in Poland were known as Lim-5s, which loosely translates to "license-built aircraft No. 5". In the hands of an experienced pilot, these aircraft could be a tricky opponent for their Western counterparts.
