The Vought F-8 Crusader was the first carrier-based fighter aircraft developed in the 1950s to achieve supersonic flight capability. Powered by its Pratt & Whitney turbojet engine with afterburner, it could exceed the then-standard top speed of Mach 1.8. It entered service with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps in the late 1950s to replace the aging Vought F7U Cutlass.
