The Phantom FG.1 was primarily used for fleet defense, interception, and ground attack missions. With a top speed of approximately Mach 2 and a service ceiling of around 17,400 meters, it was among the most capable combat aircraft of its time. After the end of the British carrier-based fighter fleet in the late 1970s, the remaining aircraft were transferred to the Royal Air Force and used mainly for air defense.
To this day, the FG.1 is considered one of the most extraordinary Phantom variants. Its distinctive appearance, with the larger air intakes for the Spey engines, and its close association with the Royal Navy make it a particularly popular aircraft among aviation enthusiasts and historians.
