In the early 1950s the Royal Air Force urgently needed a temporary solution until its own new generation of bombers were operational.
The US B-29 was a combat proven type and in 1950 an agreement was signed with the USA and the USAF loaned the RAF seventy B-29s.
A further 18 were later loaned out.
The aircraft was named Boeing Washington B.1 by RAF Bomber Command.
