The NB-52 was a specially converted B-52 Stratofortress bomber used by NASA as a carrier aircraft for experimental spacecraft. It became particularly famous for its role in the X-15 program, where it carried the research aircraft to high altitudes and released it.

The North American X-15 itself was a rocket-powered aircraft that reached speeds of over Mach 6 and altitudes of over 100 kilometers in the 1960s. It thus provided crucial data for space exploration and the development of later spacecraft and is still considered one of the fastest manned aircraft in history.
