On May 9, 1943, Reggiane received the order for the first two Re 2006 prototypes.
Construction of the first unit began in 1943, but the program faced delays; following the armistice, the Germans halted construction of the prototype. By that time, the aircraft was largely complete, save for the engine. The airframe was subsequently moved to Correggio, where work continued under German supervision. However, work was interrupted again in 1944, and the aircraft was transferred to Taliedo. There, it was left behind alongside other incomplete and damaged aircraft. The machine was scrapped in 1946 without ever having flown. Although designs for post-war versions—such as mail or racing aircraft—did exist, development never progressed beyond wooden wind-tunnel models.
