The first Ki-61 prototype took off in December 1941, and tests of additional prototypes took place throughout 1942. At the end of 1942, mass production of these aircraft began, and they reached military units only in early 1943.
In the autumn of the same year, the armament was strengthened, and during the war further improvements and the production of modernized modifications took place.
The Ki-61 earned the respect of the Allies in battles for New Guinea, the Philippines, Taiwan and Okinawa.
They formed part of Tokyo's anti-aircraft defense, but were not enough for the B-29 flying fortress.
A total of 3078 machines of all versions were produced.
