The XFL-1 experimental ship-based fighter was developed in parallel with the XP-39 Airacobra and first flown on May 13, 1940.
Powered by a liquid-cooled 1150 hp Allison XV-1710-6 12-cylinder engine, the XFL-1 differed from its land-based counterpart primarily in having tailwheel landing gear and underwing radiators.
3 decal variants:
XFL-1, in its original configuration at Buffalo, NY, May 1940
FL-1, British Royal Navy, 1942
FL-1, USS Saratoga, 1942 /
The airframe was reloaded for shipboard operations, and the proposed armament consisted of a single 12.7mm machine gun or 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub and two fuselage-mounted 7.62mm cannons, although in this case no armament was installed. The XFL-1 failed in its carrier qualification attempts and further development was halted in early 1942.
