The SMB-2 Super Mystère was the first mass-produced Western European aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight. Dassault utilized its existing Ouragan and Mystère IVB fighter jets, as well as a number of experimental prototypes, in its development. The first of 180 production aircraft took to the skies for the first time on February 26, 1957. The new aircraft were gradually assigned to three squadrons—10, 12, and 5—of the French Air Force and also flew at the CEV and CEAM test ranges and at flight schools. Later SMB-2s were fitted with the more powerful Atar 101G-2 or G-3 engine. The Super Mystères remained in service with fighter squadrons until 1977, when the last SMB-2s of the 12th Squadron were retired and replaced by the Mirage III. The SMB-2's service with the Israeli Air Force was relatively uneventful, consisting of exercises in NATO countries, in Africa, and participation in Operation Air Bull in Thailand.

The situation was quite different with the Israeli Air Force (IAF). The SMB-2's service with the IAF was characterized by participation in a series of conflicts with Israel's Arab neighbors, known as the War over Water, the Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and the protracted conflict between these wars, the so-called War of Attrition. Shortly after the Sambads, the excellent Mirage IIICs were delivered to Israel, becoming its primary frontline fighters. Consequently, the Sambads were reassigned to only one unit, the 105th Squadron, and primarily used as fighter-bombers.
