Curtiss P-40B Warhawk (Tomahawk IIA)

Probably one of the ten most recognizable aircraft in history and also the first US aircraft to be produced in truly large numbers.
The P-40 was essentially a combination of a P-36 airframe and a liquid-cooled Allison inline engine. While the engine performed well at low altitudes, it was less than brilliant at altitudes above 20,000 feet.
This rugged airframe was used in all theaters and by many Allied air forces during World War II.
It achieved its greatest notoriety through its service with the American Volunteer Group (AVG), better known as the Flying Tigers.
When the unit's brief, six-month history ended in July 1942, it was incorporated into the USAAF as the 23rd FG.
Today, the 23rd still operates from bases on the US East Coast.
