On the night of June 5-6, 1944, in the early stages of Operation Overlord, the British 6th Airborne Division was given the objective of capturing and controlling the bascule bridge that crossed the River Orne near the town of Ouistreham in Normandy .
Control of the bridge, codenamed "Pegasus", was a crucial point in securing the eastern flank of the operational scenario and preventing a counterattack by German armored troops that could reach the Allied landing site at Sword Beach.
The British paratroopers landed near the bridge in Horsa gliders and, thanks to a quick and effective action, defeated the German troops defending the bridge.
