The British Type 1942 5-gal Jerry Can was a standardized British fuel can used during World War II with a capacity of approximately 5 imperial gallons (≈ 22.7 liters). It was developed in response to the superiority of the German Wehrmacht's standard jerry can, whose design was adopted and further refined by the Allies. The British Type 1942 was constructed from pressed sheet steel, manufactured in two halves and then welded together, resulting in high stability at a relatively low weight. Characteristic features included three parallel carrying handles, allowing for easy handling by one or more people, and an internal cross-shaped reinforcement profile that provided additional strength and reduced sloshing of the contents.

Technically, the can featured a tightly closing clamp closure with a lever mechanism and integrated seal, preventing leakage even under harsh operating conditions. It was also designed to be stackable for space-saving storage during transport. Its robust construction made it resistant to shocks and temperature fluctuations, which was particularly important in operating environments like North Africa.

Historically, the jerrycan was mass-produced starting in 1942, replacing older, less reliable containers. It played a crucial role in military logistics, enabling the safe and efficient transport of fuel and other liquids. Its practicality led to its international adoption, and it remains the basis for modern fuel cans to this day.
