This summer marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Japan. Simultaneously, the Japanese film "Yukikaze" is being released, whose story revolves around the eponymous destroyer, the only ship of its class to survive the war. This moving narrative, spanning the period from the war to the present day, is deeply human. To commemorate the film's release in Japan on August 15th, this set has been released in special packaging.

Following Japan's withdrawal from the Washington Naval Treaty, plans were drawn up to build Kagero-class warships. The Yukikaze was the eighth Kagero-class destroyer completed, built in January 1940.

The destroyer saw action at Midway, Guadalcanal, the Marianas, and Leyte Gulf, and participated in other battles in the Pacific. She also served as a patrol ship and provided support for transport duties. Upon completion, she was initially armed with three 12.7 cm twin gun turrets and two 61 cm quadruple torpedo launchers, but her armament was augmented with additional anti-aircraft guns and radar in the final stages of the war.

Even during Operation Ten Ichi Go in April 1945, fighting alongside the doomed Yamato, she rescued many survivors and returned safely to port.

The Yukikaze survived World War II relatively unscathed and was therefore nicknamed "the lucky destroyer." After the war, it was used to transport Japanese soldiers and personnel back to Japan.

Later, it was given to the Republic of China as a reparations ship and remained in service until the 1960s.
