The development of the vehicle can be traced back to 1965, when the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States decided to construct a so-called Heavy Equipment Transport (HET) tank truck to transport both main battle tanks developed by MBT-70. The main contractors for the tractor unit were the US Chrysler Corporation and the German Faun, while the Federal Republic of Germany commissioned Krupp for the trailer. In 1970, the development program for the MBT-70 and the transport of heavy equipment was withdrawn. The Federal Republic of Germany successfully continued the development of the SLT50-2 tank transporter, also known as the Elefant. The Bundeswehr ordered 328 vehicles from Faun, with the last delivery in 1980. The tractor and trailer can transport Leopard 2 main battle tanks and equipment, including all armored vehicles.
