The Leopard 2 is the Bundeswehr's current main battle tank.
With its 1,500 hp engine, 120 mm smoothbore gun, and outstanding armor protection, it represents the latest state of the art.
Thanks to its innovative electronics and outstanding optics, it is one of the best main battle tanks in the world.
The latest version – the A7V – features an improved rear-view camera that makes everything visible even in poor visibility and darkness. The gunner and commander have been fitted with third-generation sights. The ice grapples are now carried on the rear of the turret. The improved barrel allows for more modern ammunition to be fired, increasing the range to 5,000 meters. Digitalized electronics enable connection to the BMS (Battle Management System) for improved troop information exchange. An air conditioning system increases the crew's endurance. Additional armor plating on the nose improves protection against armor-piercing ammunition. The increased weight necessitated a reinforced transmission and modifications to the drive train.
The top speed of the 63.9 ton Leopard 2 A7V is given as 63 km/h.

LEOPARD 2A7V
On May 5, 2017, the German Armed Forces and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) signed a contract to upgrade the 20 Leopard 2A7s already in service to the 2A7V level, as well as to manufacture and deliver 84 additional Leopard 2A7Vs from 2020. The last vehicles were delivered in 2023. As with the 2A7, the extensive changes to the 2A7V, which primarily cover the areas of protection, mobility, maneuverability, sustainability and firepower, consist not only of performance-enhancing measures, but also of supplementary measures.
This publication describes the Leopard main battle tank weapon system currently in active service in the 2A7V level of combat upgrade in maneuver use and in the current state of affairs in great detail in terms of technology.
