The 0.25t 4x4 MUNGA F-91/4 was a lightweight, all-terrain multi-purpose vehicle developed by Auto Union (later Audi) specifically for military purposes starting in the mid-1950s. The designation "MUNGA" stands for "multi-purpose universal off-road vehicle with all-wheel drive." Technically, the vehicle was based on the DKW F91 and was initially equipped with a three-cylinder two-stroke engine with a displacement of approximately 900 to 1000 cc. The model designation F-91/4 indicates the development stage with an improved drive and partially modified chassis. With a permissible total weight of 0.25 tons and a payload (hence the classification as a 0.25t 4x4), the MUNGA was one of the first standard vehicles of the newly established Bundeswehr. From 1956 onwards, it served primarily as a liaison, reconnaissance, and transport vehicle. The vehicle was distinguished by its permanent all-wheel drive, robust and simple construction, and an open body with a canvas top. Its top speed was approximately 90 km/h, which was impressive for the time. By 1968, over 46,000 units had been built, the majority of them for the German Armed Forces. In the 1970s, the MUNGA was gradually replaced by more modern vehicles such as the VW Iltis. Today, the MUNGA is considered a sought-after collector's item and is frequently seen at historic military vehicle gatherings.
