The hulls of M48 main battle tanks were converted into bridge-laying tanks (AVLB) in the 1950s.
The gun turrets were removed and a scissor bridge with a military load classification of 60 tons (MLC 60) was installed on the hull.
This meant it could be lowered over any gap up to 18 m wide that other vehicles had to cross. The hydraulic cylinder lifted the 14.65-ton bridge from the hull, lowered it to the ground and then unfolded it, a process that took only 2-5 minutes.
The M48 AVLB weighed 57,470 kg and was 11.3 m long with the bridge retracted.
