A Rheinmetall design, the Flak 43 featured an all-new gas-operated breech mechanism and required less time to manufacture. Existing ammunition was still used and the barrel remained essentially the same as the Flak 18, 36 and 37. The time to manufacture a Flak 43 was only 1,000 man-hours instead of the previous 4,320 man-hours. The rate of fire, traverse rate, and elevation rate were all increased, making the Flak 43 a major improvement over the existing guns.
