It was an attempt by British and French armies to stop the Wehrmacht's advance towards the English Channel.
The British “Frankforce” division used two regiments of Matilda tanks during the battle, which were heavily armored for the time. However, the Allied offensive failed due to the determined resistance of the 7th Panzer Division under the command of General Erwin Rommel, which held its position strongly despite the losses it suffered.
Since the German anti-tank guns were ineffective, Rommel used field artillery and anti-aircraft guns to disable the British tanks.
After the tactical defeat at Arras, British troops retreated into the English Channel and launched the code-named Operation Dynamo to evacuate French territories.
