Italy, described as the "soft underbelly" of Europe, proved to be anything but!
In fact, the Italian campaign claimed around 60,000 Allied and 50,000 German lives, making it more costly than any other campaign in Western Europe.
The Italian campaign began on 10 July 1943 with the invasion of Sicily and continued on 3 September with the invasion of the British 8th Army at the "foot" of Italy.
It only ended when victory in Europe was secured on 8 May 1945.
Troops from various nations, including British, Polish, Canadian, New Zealand and South African soldiers, equipped with British equipment, served in Italy.
