The Supermarine Spitfire is considered by many to be the most aesthetically designed single-seat fighter of WWII.
It was designed by the brilliant British designer Reginald J. Mitchell and first flew on March 5, 1936.
It was an advanced, single-seat low-wing monoplane with a very smooth, flush-riveted metal skin and a long, flowing front cowling.
The very pronounced elliptically shaped wing helped reduce parasitic drag and allowed for a relatively thin wing design.
Equipped with the Rolls-Royce Griffon twin-stage supercharger engine, the Spitfire was the Mk XIV.
It is considered to be one of the most powerful piston-engined fighters of WWII.
