The earlier designs were mainly small reconnaissance tanks. In January 1934, General Heinz Guderian planned and formulated a plan to build a medium tank weighing around 24 tonnes and travelling at a speed of 34 kilometres per hour.
Several companies submitted designs, but in 1937 the Daimler-Benz tank design was selected as the designated manufacturer for the Panzer III tank programme.
The first design was the Type III A and 10 vehicles were built.
Its armour was 5 to 15 mm thick to protect it from small arms and fragments.
The main weapons were a 3.7 cm Kwk.36 and two 7.92 mm MG-34 machine guns.
Propulsion was provided by a 246 hp Maybach HL108TR petrol engine, with which the tank could reach a top speed of 30 kilometres per hour.
10-15 prototypes of each of the A to D versions were produced.
They are characterised by the use of small wheels and leaf suspension.
Two of the ten Ausführung A tanks were unarmed for training purposes, while the other eight were used during the invasion of Poland in 1939.
However, these early tanks were replaced after 1940 by the mass-produced Ausführung III F tanks with torsion bar suspension and large wheels.
