
It was designed as a replacement for the M26 Pershing, M4 Sherman and M46 Patton variants used in the Korean War and as a successor to the M47 Patton.
A new larger driver's hatch was developed on the A1 version and introduced into series production. Also, the driver's front sight block was removable and could be replaced with an infrared IR sight block.
The restyled powerpack featured an AV-1790-7B petrol engine and a CD-850-4B transmission.
The turret was fitted with the M1 cupola enclosing the M2HB machine gun.
