In the years before the Second World War, The Royal Italian Army identified a need for mechanized artillery units capable of supporting infantry and armored divisions. Based on the chassis of the M42 medium tank, the 75/18 self-propelled gun was developed, proving to be the most feared Italian armored vehicle by the Allies during the war. Thanks to its casemate-mounted 75mm howitzer, it proved to be an effective anti-tank weapon, capable of destroying even the strongest and most heavily armored British and American tanks. However, as the war progressed, the Royal Italian Army requested the development of a more powerful version. Therefore, the 75/34 gun was mounted on the M42 self-propelled gun chassis for anti-tank defense. The first vehicles were delivered to Italian troops in the spring of 1943. Due to its strong performance in combat, it continued to be used by German units even after the armistice of September 1943.
