The new two-seater biplane - like its predecessor - had a fixed landing gear and an open cabin, but was equipped with important innovations, such as the light metal and steel frame covered with tarpaulins and metal cladding.
Thanks to the supercharged, air-cooled Fiat A.74 radial engine, the Fiat C.R. 42 a speed of 400 km/h. It was extremely maneuverable, which the Italian pilots greatly appreciated, but suffered from the limitations of the "biplane" configuration.
She was able to successfully fight the Gloster Gladiators, but was soon overtaken by faster and more heavily armed monoplanes such as the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire.
Several Fiat C.R. 42, along with G.50 fighters and BR.20, CANT Z 1007 bombers, were used by the Italian Regia Aeronautica during the Battle of Britain in the "Corpo Aereo Italiano".
