The Italian Navy emerged in the 1860s after the union of Italy. In the World War I on the side of the Allies, Italy was able to expand its fleet and use it to support its colonial ambitions in North Africa . During World War II the Italian Navy had important tasks in the Mediterranean as the supply of German-Italian Troops in North Africa as the elimination of supply deliveries of the allied opposition.
