With the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0, the German-French defense company KNDS (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann + Nexter) has unveiled a groundbreaking main battle tank concept that combines the classic Leopard 2 hull with revolutionary turret technology. The "RC" stands for Remote Controlled, because unlike previous Leopard versions, the new turret is unmanned and fully remotely operable – a milestone in the development of modern combat vehicles.
The vehicle is no longer based on the older Leopard 2A4 chassis, but apparently on a heavily modified Leopard 2A7 hull with modernized protection packages, a modified rear hull, and a new power supply concept. A striking feature is the flat, modular turret design, which not only reduces the vehicle's silhouette but also significantly increases operational flexibility. The main armament is a 120 mm smoothbore gun, with the option of integrating a future 130 mm gun. The system also features secondary armament in the form of remote-controlled weapon stations and a modernized protection system with active defense measures.
The interior of the fighting compartment has been reorganized: The crew is located entirely within the hull, protected by a reinforced armor concept. The turret, weapons, and sensors are controlled via digital control stations with 360° visibility, AI-assisted target identification, and automated target tracking. This makes the A-RC 3.0 not just a technology demonstrator, but a concrete proposal for the next generation of main battle tanks—whether as an intermediate step towards the MGCS (Main Ground Combat System) or as a standalone platform for modern operational requirements.
