French colonial policy in the 19th century was based on progressive expansion in North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
At the end of the 19th century, the Tuaregs put up fierce resistance against French troops defending their homeland in the Central Sahara.
There were numerous violent military clashes between the French Foreign Legion troops and the Tuareg-Berber troops, particularly in the most remote areas of the Algerian territories, where the French established several outposts and fortresses.
However, the local population could not keep up with the French army's more advanced weapons.
The fighting ended with the signing of the Treaties of 1905 and 1917.
The historical events inspired many novels and films. The most famous film is probably “Beau Geste” from 1939, based on the novel of the same name by P.C. from 1924. Wren
