The Saab Viggen fighter aircraft was the backbone of the Swedish Air Force for decades.
The first AJ 37 Viggen was designed as a multi-role fighter aircraft capable of air defense, anti-ship and ground attack missions.
Later, the JA-37 “Jaktviggen” version was developed to increase the effectiveness of the Swedish air defense system.
It has been equipped with a new range of avionics, radar and weapons systems that can strengthen its role as an all-weather interceptor aircraft.
In terms of design, the Viggen was characterized by adopting the aerodynamic Delta Canard wings and was powered by the large and powerful Volvo RM8 afterburning turbofan.
This allowed the Viggen to reach a top speed of Mach 2.1.
It was gradually replaced by the new and technologically advanced Saab JAS 39 Gripen.
