The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 (NATO reporting names: Fagot and Midget for the two-seat variant) is a Soviet-made, single-engine jet fighter featuring all-metal construction and swept wings.
Its maiden flight took place in December 1947, followed by official entry into service in 1949. Development was initially delayed due to the lack of a suitable engine. It was only through the reverse-engineering of the British Rolls-Royce Nene Mk. I engine that a suitable powerplant became available to fully exploit the potential of the newly designed airframe. Including licensed production versions (such as the Polish Lim-1 and Lim-2 variants), a total of more than 18,000 aircraft across all versions were manufactured. Key basic variants include:
MiG-15P: All-weather fighter
MiG-15UTI: Two-seat trainer aircraft
MiG-15SB: Fighter-bomber
MiG-15bis: Refined fighter with the more powerful VK-1 engine
The MiG-15 gained worldwide renown during the Korean War (1950–1953), where it outperformed the Western aircraft of its time until the USA deployed the F-86 Sabre. It also saw service in other regional conflicts, including the Suez Crisis (1956) and various conflicts in the Middle East.
