No submarine development was more important for the navies of the world: The most advanced German submarine,
the Type XXI influenced the submarine construction for decades. Few of these boats have survived, and none has such a remarkable history as U 2540: It was launched just before the war ended in May 1945, sunk by its crew, then lifted after twelve years, repaired and used by the German Navy, put out of service 1982. Today it is a museum boat in the Technik Museum in Bremerhaven.
