The railroad was formed during World War II, the logistical backbone of the German Wehrmacht. With the advance of the German troops, the route network of the Deutsche Reichsbahn expanded continuously. The Ministry of Transport (RVM) commissioned professional photographers in order to capture the everyday operation of the railway. Many of the photographs were never published and disappeared after the war in archives or private collections.
