1:32 scale Trumpeter Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition

Verifizierter Kauf - von Marko Joensuu verfasst am 02.09.2020 21:31:31
This is Trumpeter 1:32 scale Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition, Item Number 02261, kit. I do not know what kind of research and where Trumpeter has done for their 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit. However, a few Me 262 jets exist in various museums: Me 262 A-1a/R7, W.Nr.500071 White 3, III./JG 7 in Deutsches Museum, Munich, German Me 262 A-1a, reconstructed from parts of crashed and incomplete Me 262s in Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr, Germany Me 262 A-1a W.Nr.501232 Yellow 5, 3./KG(J)6 in National Museum of the USAF, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, USA Me 262 A-1a/U3 W.Nr.500453, Flying Heritage Collection, Everett, Washington, USA Me 262 A-1a/R7 W.Nr.500491 Yellow 7, II./JG 7, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA Me 262 A-1a W.Nr.112372, RAF Museum, Cosford, United Kingdom Me 262 A-2a W.Nr.500200 Black X 9K+XK, 2 Staffel./KG 51, Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia Me 262 B-1a/U1, W.Nr.110305 Red 8, South African National Museum of Military History, Johannesburg, South Africa Me 262 B-1a, W.Nr.110639 White 35, National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Florida, USA Plus a couple of Avia 92s (these are post-war copies of Me 262s) Avia S-92, Prague Aviation Museum, Kbely, Prague, Czech Republic Avia CS-92, Prague Aviation Museum, Kbely, Prague, Czech Republic Therefore, it is quite fair, logical and rational to believe that Trumpeter 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit is based on the Trumpeter’s research of existing Me 262s at some or even all these above listed museums. Trumpeter had already introduced four 1:32 scale Messerschmitt Me 262 kits to market before this 1:32 scale Item Number 02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit release in 2008. These four were namely Item Number 02235 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a (a new tool initial release) in 2005, Item Number 02236 Messerschmitt Me 262A-2a (a rebox with updated/new parts and new decals) in 2006, Item Number 02260 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Heavy Armament (a rebox with updated/new parts and new decals) in 2007 and Item Number 02237 Messerschmitt Me 262B-1a/U1 (a rebox with updated/new parts and new decals) in 2008. Thus, albeit already 12 years old, Item Number 02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit is the newest 1:32 scale Me 262 kit in Trumpeter’s line of 1:32 scale Me 262 kits. Trumpeter #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit is packaged in a medium size box, on the top of which is a nice color painting of Maj. Heinz Bär’s Me 262A-1, Tactical Number "Red 13" being prepared for a flight. Unfortunately, Trumpeter does not reveal the box artist’s name, which is a shame as the box art painting is very well done and I would like to see box artists given the credit for their work. Inside the box there is a smaller cardboard box, in which there are 12 clear parts including canopy parts, one fret of 14 photo-etched metal parts, four metal landing struts, a photo-film for instrument panel and four rubber tires. Overall, the kit has 307 light grey plastic and 55 clear injection molded parts on 11 sprues, one fret of 14 photo-etched metal parts (seat belt and engine), four metal landing struts, a photo-film for instrument panel and four rubber tires and one decal sheet with markings for two WWII Me 262A-1as. The length of the kit's fuselage is 331.5mm and the wingspan is 391mm. Overall number of parts, plastic, metal and PE, is 385. The parts are perfectly molded, accurately and well detailed. There are no molding or flash issues on the critical parts - very well done, Trumpeter. The excellent quality, but little thick, Trumpeter decals cover two WWII Me 262A-1as: 1. Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a, Messerschmitt AG Augsburg's Schwäbisch Hall Factory Production Block 110546 - 110570, W.Nr. 110559, Tactical Number "Red 13", pilot Maj., later Obstlt., Heinz Bär, Gruppe Kommandeure, III./EJG 2 (III. Gruppe/Ergänzungsjagdgeschwader 2), Lechfeld 13.2. - 23.4.1945. The painting guide given by Trumpeter for the A/C, RLM 81/82/76, is correct with the red nose. As a side note, while serving as the Gruppe Kommandeure of III./EJG 2, Maj. Bär claimed 15 jet victories (2 x B-24 Liberator, 3 x B-26 Marauder, 5 x P-47 Thunderbolt and 5 x P-51 Mustang) quite likely with Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a "Red 13" and was officially given the credit for 13 jet victories (2 x B-24 Liberator, 3 x B-26 Marauder, 3 x P-47 Thunderbolt and 5 x P-51 Mustang). Later, while serving as the Verbandsführer of JV 44 (Jagdverband 44), München-Riem 27.4. - 8.5.1945, Obstlt. Heinz Bär claimed 3 jet victories (3 x P-47 Thunderbolt) quite likely with Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a "Red 13" and was officially given the credit for 3 jet victories (3 x P-47 Thunderbolt). Therefore, Obstlt. Heinz Bär was officially credited 16 jet victories and unofficially 18 jet victories with Me 262A-1a. Obstlt. Heinz Bär ranks the 4th best jet ace in WWII with 16 official credited jet victories right after the best jet ace Maj. Georg-Peter Eder (25 official credited jet victories), the second best jet ace Lt. Rudolf Rademacher (24 official credited jet victories) and the third best jet ace Oblt. Franz Schall (17 official credited jet victories). Unofficially Obstlt. Heinz Bär shares the 3rd best jet ace ranking with Oblt. Franz Schall, since both of them have 18 unofficial jet victories in WWII. However, it is possible that night fighter ace Maj. Kurt Welter had as many as 29 jet victories in WWII flying different versions of Me 262. The 29 jet victories would make Maj. Kurt Welter by far the best jet ace in WWII and all time. Anyway, either Maj. Kurt Welter or Maj. Georg-Peter Eder is the best jet ace of all time. 2. Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a, Messerschmitt AG Augsburg's Schwäbisch Hall Factory Production Block 110911 - 110960, W.Nr. 110956, Tactical Number "White 17", pilot Fw. Franz Holzinger, III./EJG 2 (III. Gruppe/Ergänzungsjagdgeschwader 2), Lechfeld 16.3. - 29.4.1945. However, the white letter S indicates that the A/C was a Schulemaschine, only to be used for training. Trumpeter has given a wrong W.Nr. 110998 for this A/C; the correct is W.Nr. 110956 as stated already above. The painting guide given by Trumpeter for the A/C, RLM 74/75/76, is otherwise correct, but the nose of the A/C is dark grey. Decals include a maintenance stenciling set too. Also, there is almost A3 size full color Painting & Marking guide included. That’s a very nice touch. Trumpeter #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit has virtually a complete interior, which includes two full very detailed spectacular Junkers Jumo 004 B-1 axial-flow turbojet engines, a very nicely detailed cockpit with PE seatbelts and a photo-film with the gauge faces already printed on it for the instrument panel, internal fuel tanks (front, mid and rear), FuG 16ZY radio equipment, PR-16 direction finding equipment, guns (well detailed 30mm Rheinmetall-Borsig MK 108 cannons with ammo feed chutes) and gun bays (with needed details) and wheel wells (quite beautifully detailed) and extremely nice metal landing struts. There are several options; gun bays can be open or closed, flight control surfaces are separate and positionable, canopy/windsreen can be open or closed and there are optional external fuel drop tanks. Let's walk through sprues and other parts a little bit more closely. Sprue A - consists of the clear fuselage and fuselage parts. Sprue B - contains the wings and wing parts; flaps, ailerons, slats and pitot tube plus antenna. Sprue C - has parts for undercarriage, undercarriage doors, wheel parts, tailplane; rudder and horizontal stabilizers. Sprue D - provides parts for the cockpit and cockpit interior, Revi 16B gunsight and gun bay. Sprue E – two of which - consists of the engine nacelles and parts for the Jumo 004 engines. Sprue F – two of which - consists of the Jumo 004 B-1 engines and parts for the Jumo 004 engines, Ratogs plus MK 108 cannons. Sprue G - clear forward windscreen, clear armored windscreen glass, clear canopy, clear rear canopy, clear cockpit instrument panels. Sprue M – has internal fuel tanks mounts for drop tanks and drop tanks. Photo-etched fret – fourteen PE metal parts for seat belts and some for engines. Photo-film – a PF for instrument panel Metal parts - four metal landing struts. Rubber parts - four rubber tires One decal sheet with stenciling Trumpeter's instruction book is good, clear, quite well designed, printed in black and white and when paint, extra parts are required the call outs are quite clear too. Instructions are very easy to follow. There are also some very helpful sections that clearly display when and how to remove tabs from parts. Additionally, as already mentioned above, Trumpeter has included full color nearly A3-size painting and marking instructions sheet for two marking options. Naturally Trumpeter's1:32 scale Me 262 kits have been compared to newer Revell’s 1:32 scale Me 262 kits. So how do they stack up? I’ll cover that in Revell’s1:32 scale Me 262 review later on. So, what's my personal opinion about Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit? I'm inclined to say that despite its age, Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit is a very good kit. Trumpeter’s concept is pretty much the same as Tamiya’s; to build the exact finished replica of the real A/C using the superb engineering and fit. While Tamiya's 1:32 scale kits are always consistent with the excellent engineering, fit, accuracy and overall quality and you'll always know what you are going get without exceptions, not all Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale kits are excellent, as the engineering, fit, accuracy and overall quality are not consistent with all of them. Therefore, there are very good Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale kits and then there are more or less flops. Luckily Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit is even an excellent kit. Therefore, we can fairly well assume that all Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale Me 262 kits are very good. Trumpeter’s 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition kit deserves five stars, especially at this price point. However, it should be noted that despite being an excellent 5 star kit, it may or may not exactly reach the level of the state of the art 1:32 scale A/C kits, which are e.g. following kits: Volks/Zoukei-mura Inc.'s 1:32 scale Dornier Do 335 A-0 "Pfeil", Heinkel He 219 A-0 "Uhu", Focke-Wulf Ta-152H-0 and Henschel Hs 129B-2/RIII Hong Kong Models' 1:32 scale Avro Lancaster B Mk.I/Avro Lancaster "Dambuster" and Dornier Do 335 B-2 "Zerstörer"/Dornier Do 335 B-6 Night Fighter, Revell's 1:32 scale Messerschmitt Bf 110C-2/C-7, Messerschmitt Me 262A-1/A-2/Messerschmitt Me 262B-1/U-1 and Junkers Ju-88A-1/Junkers Ju 88A-4, Cyber Hobby/Dragon's Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3/E-4/E-7 Tamiya's 1:32 scale Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero/Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero, Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc/Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII/Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVIe, De Havilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI and North American 1:32 P/F-51D/K Mustang kits. Finally, Trumpeter has made an excellent research with its Me 262 kits, since the outcome is a very good/excellent. Perhaps Trumpeter's 1:32 scale Me 262 kits (along with Revell’s 1:32 scale Me 262 kits?) are the ultimate plastic Me 262 kits ever produced. Trumpeter's 1:32 scale #02261 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a Clear Edition is truly an outstanding effort from Trumpeter and a highly recommended kit and certainly a must kit for 1:32 scale Me 262 fans and those modelers, who are interested in WWII A/Cs and specially WWII jets. Get one and enjoy building it. Thanks to my credit card and naturally Trumpeter and a very good service from MBK for the kit review! Recommended reading for Me 262 modelers: Walter J. Boyne's Messerschmitt Me 262 Arrow to the Future, hardcover book published by The Smithsonian Institute in 1980 and Schiffer (Military/Aviation) Publishing Ltd in 1996; an old but still a very good and classic book about Me 262. Willy Radinger's and Walter Schick's Messerschmitt Me 262 Development Testing Production, hardcover book published by Schiffer (Military/Aviation) Publishing Ltd in 1993; originally published by AVIATIC Verlag GmbH, Planegg in 1992 as Me 262, Entwicklung, Erprobung und Fertigung des ersten einsatzfärhigen Düsenjägers der Welt; an old but still a very good and classic book about Me 262, pretty much the basic Me 262 reference book. Manfred Boehme's JG 7: The World's First Jet Fighter Unit 1944/1945, hardcover book published by Schiffer (Military/Aviation) Publishing Ltd in 1992; originally published by Motorbuch Verlag, Stuttgart in 1992 as Jagdgeschwader 7, Die Chronik eines Me 262-Geschwader 1944/1945; another old but still a very good and classic book about Me 262; the true reference book for the chronology of JG 7. Robert Forsyth's Jagdverband 44 Squadron of Experten, softcover book published by Osprey Publishing Ltd in 2008; the title says it all, a very good chronology of JV 44. David Baker's Messerschmitt Me 262, hardcover book published by The Crowood Press in 1997; yet another old but still a very good and classic book - one of the very best books ever written on Me 262. Dennis R. Jenkins' Messerschmitt Me 262 Sturmvogel, softcover book published by Specialty Press in 1996 and an updated version in 2002; quite a good technical book of Me 262. J. Richard Smith’s and Eddie J. Creek’s Me 262 Volume 1, 2, 3 & 4, hardcover books published by Classic Publications in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2000 respectively; often referred as the bible books of Me 262, but quite likely need to be updated. Nevertheless, must books for Me 262 fans. John Foreman's and S.E. Harvey's The Messerschmitt Me 262 Combat Diary The Story of the World's First Jet Fighter in Battle hardcover or softcover book published by Air Research Publications first in 1990, an updated version in 1995 and a reprinted version in 2008; absolutely the very best book on the operational history of Me 262 A/C. A must for everyone interested in Me 262 jet A/Cs. Robert Pęczkowski's Messerschmitt Me 262 A Schwalbe, hardcover book published by Mushroom Model Publications in 2014; probably the best book for Me 262A modelers (taking into account the modeling perspective). A must book for Me 262 fans. Additional recommended reading for the Me 262: Prepared and edited by F.D. Van Wart, 1st Lt., Me-262 A-1 Pilot's Handbook, softcover report published by Headquarters Air Material Command Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, The United States Air Corps on the 15th of July 1946; this is the pilot manual/handbook of the Me 262A-1 by The USAAF right after the Second World War. An interesting reading and quite likely an absolute must for every one interested in Me 262s. Prepared and edited by H.G. Andreas Zapf’s Me 262 10./NJG 11 A detailed look into the Messerschmitt Me 262s related to "Kommando Welter", a research paper published by Andreas Zapf in 2015; an interesting reading and quite likely a must for every one interested in Me 262s.
